A newly discovered bug leaving everything from smart appliances and thermostats to Internet servers and even home routers vulnerable to hackers has been classified as “catastrophic” and is sparking a massive examination of computer systems across the Internet.
Security firms working to patch the vulnerability — dubbed the Bash Bug or shellshock — said the problem is even more widespread, and has the ability to affect more systems, than the HeartBleed bug, which forced the government of Canada to shut down systems, including that of the Canada Revenue Agency, earlier this year.
Shortly after the Bash Bug was discovered late Wednesday night, Tod Beardsley, engineering manager at cybersecurity firm Rapid7, rang alarm bells online, calling the threat a 10 out of 10 and urging businesses to update the software on any and all affected equipment with Unix-based operating systems.
