Egypt has carried out the first death sentence handed down over the deadly violence which followed the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
Mahmoud Ramadan was hanged in the early hours of Saturday morning. He had been found guilty of murder, for pushing a young man from the top of a high building in the coastal city of Alexandria in July 2013.
Captured on camera, the incident became a notorious symbol of the bloodiest summer of Egypt’s modern history.
Mr Ramadan was one of several men who chased 19-year-old Mohammed Badr Al-Din and three teenage friends up an apartment block on 5 July 2013 as clashes raged in the surrounding neighbourhood. Mr Morsi had been overthrown two days before in a coup led by General Abdelfattah el-Sisi, who is now president.
A widely circulated video showed Mr Din and his friends cowering as assailants pelted them with rocks and sticks before throwing two of the boys 20ft off a water tower. Mr Din was shoved thrown all the way to the ground and he later died of internal bleeding.
