The Federal Government has passed new legislation designed to block access to websites that are used to find pirated material, such as The Pirate Bay and Kick Ass Torrents.
The new laws mean that copyright holders can apply to the Federal Court to have a website that’s hosting their content – things like tv shows, movies, music or games – blocked for Australian users.
But there’s a catch: only websites that have piracy as their “primary purpose” can be blocked. It’s up to the Federal Court to assess if the website’s main purpose is to infringe copyright, then it can order Australian ISPs to block the websites.
The legislation passed the Senate on Monday with the support of Labor, but the Greens and Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm opposed it.
Greens Senator Scott Ludlam told Hack that he doesn’t think the laws will work because people can use VPNs to avoid detection.
