An update to existing law will make the practice of “revenge porn” illegal in Britain starting this spring.
When passed, the law would specifically police instances where an individual “shares private and sexual images of another person without that person’s permission, and with the intent of causing distress,” a Thursday Associated Press article said.
That day, Queen Elizabeth II approved the addition to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill which will address revenge porn. Offenders could face up to two years in prison for posting such images online or sharing them by other means.
In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission has begun to crack down on revenge porn offenders. In New Jersey, one of 16 states with revenge porn laws, New York Jets linebacker Jermaine Cunningham was charged in January with violating the state’s revenge porn statute.
