Russian hackers obtained sensitive emails written by President Barack Obama when they penetrated the White House unclassified email system last October, it has been reported.
The emails from Mr Obama to White House staffers and other officials were “swept up” by Russian hackers when they accessed the systems of the White House, State Department and FBI last year, the New York Times said, citing unnamed officials.
If confirmed, the report would indicate that the White House security breach was far more serious than administration officials first admitted last October when the cyber-attack was presented as more of a nuisance than an actual threat to security.
Although Mr Obama’s closely-guarded personal email account was not hacked directly, the intruders could have come across emails from the president to his staff sitting in the inboxes of their non-classified accounts, the paper said.
